Effective Strategies In Using Your Learning Patterns

What makes Let Me Learn so powerful is the strategies one can use when one has the self-awareness of one’s own patterns. Here are some situations where one can use various strategies. For a broader selection of strategies, you can become a member.

Here is a strategy card by a student on how he would become a better writer.

Strategy Card for Working in a Team
Strategies are used in many different areas of life, including team building. Students learn this life-long skill of how to work with those who do not have the same learning patterns and find that each pattern is key to a successful outcome. Here is an example of a Middle School student who developed a strategy card before working with her team members.

Reading Strategies for Those Who Avoid Precision

STUFF TO LOOK FOR

  1. Look in the Section Review and put the names and terms listed there into a text box labled “Stuff to Look For.”
  2. Cover the side of the page opposite from the one you are reading. DON’T LET THOSE PARAGRAPHS OF WORDS DISTRACT YOU!
  3. As you read watch for the words you put in the STUFF TO LOOK FOR box. When you find a word, write down your definition or explanation of it in your notes. See the attached example of how to do this.
  4. Use your Learning Patterns:
    1. Set your Sequence aside. Don’t start at the beginning of the assignment. Instead look at the questions and terms at the end of the section to see what it is you are supposed to watch for as you read.
    2. Next use your Confluence and skim the material. Read the captions under each picture to see what information can be found there.
    3. Next read the panels or color insets. They are usually an overview of the key points in the text. Your Sequence will like the outline/list form found in the panels. This is the information you could put in your notes and outline.
    4. Now you are ready to use your Precision to actually read the text, but remember, don’t read every sentence! You Avoid Precision or only Use It As Needed. Don’t let the words overwhelm you!
  5. Special Notes:

Your Sequence tells you to start at the beginning of the chapter. And some well meaning elementary reading teacher taught you to read every word. Both of these “learning laws” need to be set aside if you are going to succeed in reading text book materials

If you read a half page at a time, and you only looked at the first and last two sentences of paragraphs, this is all the words you would have read, and you would still be able to understand the content and answer the questions at the end of the section.
