It’s important to note that even though individuals may favor one Learning Pattern more than another, everyone uses their Learning Patterns together to varying degrees. More importantly, only knowing about the patterns won’t help you. You need to understand how to make them work for you through the metacognitive process–made easier through the Personal Learning Coach.
The person who uses the Sequential pattern on a Use First basis is most comfortable following step-by-step directions and completing assignments from beginning to end without interruption.
(Example: Miguel drew a picture of a house exactly as he was told, no less and no more and took time to double check his work for neatness.)
The sequential pattern seeks order and consistency. Someone who uses this pattern at a “Use-first” level needs:
- Clear Directions – I become frustrated when the directions aren’t clear or don’t make sense.
- Practice/Planning – It’s hard when the teacher isn’t organized or doesn’t explain things thoroughly.
- Time to Complete Work – I need time to study and complete the work in class.
- Neatness – I need time to make my work neat and to make sure my answers are correct.
The person who uses the Precise pattern on a Use First basis takes detailed notes, asks plenty of questions, and answers questions in a highly specific manner.
(Example: Amanda took extra time to draw a picture of a house in great detail, including gutters and shingles on the roof.)
The precise pattern wants to know exactly what is going on. Someone who uses this pattern at a “Use-first” level needs:
- Correct Information – I like the teacher to see that my work is correct.
- Detailed Information – I take detailed notes and then go over and over them.
- Asking/Answering Questions – If you want to know what I know, read my answers or ask me questions.
- Writing Detailed Answers – I like to show what I know by writing a several page paper and looking up stuff.
Technical Reasoning Pattern
The person who uses the Technical pattern on a Use First basis seeks to problem-solve, doesn’t like to write out answers, and learns best from experience. That person processes technically using stand-alone, independent reasoning.
(Example: Jason enjoyed drawing his house a lot more than writing about it. His drawing included a picket fence he had helped his mom and dad paint.)
Someone who uses this pattern at a “Use-first” level needs:
- Technical Reasoning/Hands-On – Let me build things!
- Autonomy/Outside – Let me learn by going home, living and experiencing it.
- Real World Experiences – Take me into the real world and show me something.
- Problem Solving- I want to figure this out on my own.
The person who uses the Confluent pattern on a Use First basis tends to avoid conventional approaches, seeks alternative ways to complete assignments, often starts before hearing all the directions, and improvises.
(Example: Ivonne started drawing her house before the teacher finished the instructions. She added a secret entrance on the side of her rainbow-colored fantasy house.)
Confluent processors rely on intuition rather than specific information or knowledge of how something works. Someone who uses this pattern at a “Use-first” level needs to:
- Use Own Ideas – I don’t like having to do an assignment one certain way.
- Use Imagination – I like exploring new things.
- Use Presentations/Creative Writing – I like to write things the same way I’d say them.
- Risk Taking- Who will care if I do this differently?
